Joe Shellhorn Falesia 5k, Portugal 2025

Race Date: Tuesday 18th March 2025

For the last couple of years a small group from Steel City have been to The Algarve for a week’s warm weather training. This year the trip didn’t happen but undeterred Sarah Allcard joined Mike Gratton’s (London Marathon 1983) 2:09 training camp. Those who stayed at home must have known something as the weather was generally cold, wet and windy with some of the usual off road training routes under water.

The three lap course starts with a pleasant descent but this also means three unwelcome climbs.

However the sun shone for the Joe Shellhorn Falesia 5k, now sponsored by 2:09 Tours, with Sarah winning a Peak Your Run bag as first F50. Heading for an 80 mile week, this was already on top of “treacle legs” after two track sessions in the previous two days. With twice a day training there was a five mile recovery run later that afternoon.

Winners were Sam Gilliver (Mansfield) 15:51 and Martha Owen (Deeside) 18:25 but the stand out result was from M60 Phillip Parry (Bristol and West) who ran a startling 17:42.

Perhaps next year.
