English Athletics Combined Events Masters Invite – 9th March at EIS.

Race Report by Jed Turner

It was a nice pleasant surprise that a week or so ago I got an invite from English Athletics to run in a Masters invite only 800m race. This was part of the U15/17 Indoor Combined Event
Championship and indoor Junior Para Championships. Although I had already entered to run the Wingerworth Wobble on the Saturday, I could not resist the temptation to accept the
invitation, given it was at the English Institute of Sport. Prior to the event I checked to see who else was running and it was good to notice that Kate Scott was also invited.

Our races were in the afternoon, and I decided I would take advantage of a lovely day and cycled to EIS. It was a great atmosphere watching all the young ones taking part in the combined events. Although it was an invitation only, there wasn’t many turning up due tot he short notice so each of the men’s and women’s races, combined all the age groups from age 50 to 65.

To be honest I wasn’t that confident about running well as I had no idea how my legs would feel after running the day before at the Wingerworth Wobble, which was a tough trail race.

So, the plan was to just see how it goes and hope my legs were ok. I therefore was a bit cautious and went through the first 400m in about 72 seconds, but realised that I was feeling fine, so I pressed on and felt strong through to the finish. I was happy with 2.27, and given I am 65 in a few months not a bad effort.

Kate was also very happy to receive an invite from England Athletics. She had a brilliant race, going through the first 400 in a very quick time and hanging on courageously in a strong field to get a season’s best by one second of 2.53. Kate was absolutely chuffed and delighted with her run and is now looking forward to a good outdoor season.
