Race Date: Sunday 5th May 2024
Race Report by Martin Downham
The 2024 Run Greno 11km (chip timed) Trail Fun Run (as it’s described on their website) is quite a fun run, especially on a gloriously warm sunny morning (like we had on Sunday) when most of the muddy paths are starting to dry-out.
This North Sheffield course is described as a hilly 7.3-mile (11.92km) trail race (with an altitude gain of approx. 270m/900ft).
The course passes through a wide mix of terrains, including some of the more challenging woodland trails of Greno, Wharncliffe and Wheata Wood. At the top of the first major climb the course passes through farmland on to moorland fields with fantastic all around views of the surrounding and distance areas. After a weaving woodland section, dodging a lot of soft mud and vegetation the trail descends (over a style) into Grenoside Village. The finish line is completed by entering the Grenoside park and completing a lap of the grassed playing field in front of the Community Centre.
Car parks were available and there was plenty of nearby on street parking. Ample toilets (when I got there) were also available in the Community Centre with refreshments (including BEER! – available to celebrate finishing and Jo’s birthday). A goodie bag, pre paid burgers and “slate” medals were available if ordered in advance. Though I believe both could also be purchased on the day.
Thanks go to Grenoside Scouts for organising this wonderfully scenic and hilly event. Those hills were challenging! Thanks also go to The Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team who gave up their time to help out at various points on the course.
The race was won by Ollie Hill, unailliated, in 44:44. The first female finisher was Bridget Coomber of Denby Dale AC in 56:45.
