It is now a tradition that the opener to the South Yorkshire Cross Country season is run over a shorter course than the remaining three races as fine weather and good conditions underfoot welcomed competitors to Norfolk Park with its spectacular views over the City of Sheffield. Norfolk Park is not flat and even with the women running only 5400m and the men 7800m this was nevertheless a testing course. Thanks go to Hallamshire Harriers for hosting this event.

First woman home for Steel City was Caroline Brock who was fourth overall and first in the F35 race category. In the men’s race, much to the amusement of the onlookers, a fast finishing Naeem Stevens flew up the final hill and nearly caught his colleague Rob Byers who admitted to the poor pace judgement which nearly led to his demise.

Steel City numbers at Norfolk Park were perhaps lower than anticipated for a Sheffield race as another event took place locally that morning although it is understood that some competed in both races. Special mention to Andy Rowland who raced only two weeks after he had finished the Barcelona Ironman. Don’t forget to keep your number for the next race at Longley Park (NOT Campsall) on Sunday 27th October and also a 15% discount at Up and Running.
