Race Date: Sunday 3rd March 2024
A couple of weeks ago, Ian Stinson and I made our annual prilgimage up to Bampton in Cumbria to run the Haweswater half marathon, a very friendly and perfectly organised half, hosted by Penrith’s Eden Runners. As my Dad, Syd, is an Eden Runner he always volunteers and I go up there to make a weekend of it. As with any race in March, it’s subject to the weather gods and this year was no different. The A66 was a blizzard on the way up and Saturday plans to run the Expresso round with the Headtorch gang were scuppered with the slush freezing heavily overnight. Penrith parkrun was also cancelled!
Thankfully it thawed during Saturday and on Sunday we were treated to snow capped fells as we ran from Bampton, along the shores on Haweswater to the end, turned round and ran back. It’s a small half with around 500 entrants. As mentioned, very well organised and very friendly. I highly recommend it.
The male race was won by Tom Humphries of Border Harriers in 1.10.49. The female race was won by Shirin Ibrahim of Blackburn Road Runners in 1.30.24.
