DonFaster 5k 2024 – The Alternative Friday Night Out!

Report by: Martin Downham

Date: 22nd March 2024

Held at The Cycle Hub at The Dome, Doncaster this cycle track 5k event is the perfect opportunity to secure an outdoor 5k PB, given that the track is about as flat as you’ll find in South Yorkshire. 0m elevation according to Stava!

The event started at 7pm with the “elite” sub 21minute runners (the majority) taking part in the first wave. The course is 5 laps + a short sprint on a smooth tarmac track with many gentle corners. The track has been accurately measured so (maybe like some parkruns) strava/garmin etc distances may vary either way (they say).

With some class runners achieving some great times in the first wave, “the others” (and me) set of at 7.30pm. Chipped timing ensured accurate timing over the distance.

The track was nicely floodlit for this Friday evening / night time event. The track was well marshaled and the marshals were all very supportive (especially if your name is Tara – who finally emerged from the shadows to pip me on the line with a well timed final “sprint”. I’ll get over it.

Thanks to The Danum Harriers for putting on this speed fest. The event is repeated in July and October should a flat 5k be on your to do list. After all Doncaster is only a short sprint down the M18 and The Dome (next door) is available for added culture and leisure (if needed).

Sheffield (rather than Striders) impressed at the sharp end with 4 out of the 7 sub 16 minute runners representing both the “University of Sheffield Union of Students” and “Sheffield Hallam University AC”. Nice running!

First man was Ed Bovingdon (Leeds City AC) in 15:11 and first lady was Katie Burney (Sheffield Hallam UAC) in 19:29.  There were 138 finishers, Martin was the sole Strider.
