Dick Smith 10k Race Walk Race Report and Result

By: Tony Bell

Race Date: 1st June, 2024

Venue: Bury, Greater Manchester

Over the Pennines by train and tram to Bury, in the north of Greater Manchester, for another racewalk. Lancashire Walking Club have recently got some new members who are still improving, I was wondering what I would have to do to beat them in this 10000m track race. However, they didn’t turn up!

3 laps to warm up, feeling a bit tired. Then 7 lined up for the 10000m, this included a visitor from London. It was warm and sunny enough for me to race in sunglasses, a rare occurrence for a race in Manchester :-). Off we went, I took the lead from the start. I had someone just behind to 7 laps but then I had got clear, I had lapped everyone else by then. The race was effectively over and I slowed a bit. I got to halfway in 33.01, hard work in from then, I didn’t get to lap the second placer but I was able to speed-up at the end.

I won the race in 66.23, it is always nice to win but it would have been good to have had some company in the race. 2 slow laps to recover, photo shows me on my post-race recovery.
