A typical summer evening fell race in the Peaks- pick a village, find the biggest nearby hill, get some fell runners to run up and down it. A handful of striders headed over to Castleton on what turned out to be a lovely summer’s evening to climb up Lose hill, run along the ridge and most of the way up Mam Tor (not quite to the top as the National Trust refused permission) and then head back down into Castleton. The views were lovely, the sheep very confused, and the short out-and-back section provided a nice chance to cheer on other striders. Apart from one downhill section, the route was relatively non-technical and more run-able than some of the other Peak District fell races.
The women’s race was won by the Strider’s Abbie Pearse in 45.09 and the men’s race was won by Dan Haworth (Matlock AC) in 38.21.
