Race Date: Saturday 26th October 2024
Run around the edge of Carsington Water near Ashbourne, this RunThrough Trails event offers 10k and Half Marathon distances. This was the fourth running of the event this year, with a fifth to come in December.
The first 5.6 miles are an out (northeast along the lake’s edge) and back, after which you continue to follow the contours of the lake anticlockwise, running the earlier ‘back’ section for a second time to finish off. The 10k is a single lap of the lake with no out and back.
The course is undulating, mostly on compacted gravel, but with some mud and puddles in the dips on this October visit. The biggest ‘hump’ appears as you turn a corner at around 7.6 miles (or roughly 3.2km of the 10k), marking an increase in the ups and downs until around the 10 mile point. My road shoes were fine for grip, despite being at the end of their life with a piece of heel tread flapping about for the last couple of miles.
The race was well organised from start to finish, with smooth number pick up on the day and lots of encouraging marshals. Parking at the visitor centre is plentiful but currently £6 for 4hrs.
I was the sole Strider amongst 289 finishers at the Carsington Water Half. The men’s race was won by Jack Pilkington of Warrington AC in a time of 01:16:53. Lucy Naga of Edinburgh AC won the women’s race in a time of 01:33:41.
