It’s that time of year again to hit the winter fells (and get covered in mud). I enjoyed the Bolt last year and was eager to run the course again. The route is 13km of mixed terrain and 400m of ascent (approx half a mile longer than last year due to route change at the start).

The route is well marked and marshaled and therefore suitable for all levels of experience. There are also tail runners/walkers.

I have to say that the marshals are fantastic… the enthusiasm and support is some of the best (thank you marshals).

This a FRA mandated mixed terrain fell race through woodland and pasture on paths and trails with minimum road running. Be prepared to take minimum kit and wear grippy trainers.

Race history:

Inaugurated in 2019 with a first cohort of 280 participants, the Bolt is a relatively new fell race. It is a revival of the old Baslow fell race and it takes place on a new, beautiful and challenging course that skirts the Baslow skyline.

The route:

The route climbs away from Baslow through fields towards Hassop, then proceeds along the beautiful ridge path through Bank Wood and Bramley Wood. It then drops down to the River Derwent and Calver / Curbar before climbing up to Baslow Edge (with its fabulous views across both the Dark & White Peak) through a mixture of limestone trail and gritstone before descending Bar Road into Baslow and the finish.

At the finish:

Cake… cake and more cake. They cater for everyone (vegan, dairy free and gluten free options). The finish area has a relaxed friendly atmosphere where you can stop for a cuppa and a catch up.

I will be back again next year.

The race was won by Andrew Hayes (Dark Peak Fell Runners) in 00:49:02 and Lauren Hayes (Hallamshire Harriers) in 00:58:09 .
