Race report by David Twigg

Looking for a tune up race before the Lochness marathon in October and not wanting to race as high a mileage as a half marathon, I settled on the Wetherby 10k, just outside Leeds.

Now in its 18th year, Wetherby 10k is a Multi Terrain, flat course which starts and ends at Wetherby Race course.

The race started at 2.00pm and I set off with the lead pack of runners down a paved, downhill 1st km which quickly turned into a farmer’s track, which was extremely muddy and precarious under foot which slowed my pace down significantly.

The track and field portion lasts until around 4km, where it joins more of a paved track for the rest of the race. By this point, the lead pack of runners had disappeared into the distance and I was left to churn out the rest of the race on tired legs due to my marathon training efforts of the previous week, eventually running it home in 37:19 and taking 15th place overall (just beating my previous 10km PB by a couple of seconds).

A total of 724 runners ran the 10k with the first male being Joe Gentry in a time of 32:47 and first lady being Catherine Williamson of “Loftus & Whitby AC” in a time of 37:39.

One other strider attended the event, William Fu, with a time of 38:59 and placed 30th overall.
