Saunders Mountain Marathon 2023

Race Date 1/2 July 2023

The Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon  is a 2-day mountain navigation race with a variety of courses in the West Lake District area.  This year it was based in the Coniston area.   The event has 7 courses for teams of 2. Teams are given a map on day one and choose which controls to navigate to over a 2 day total of 12 hours, staying the night mid-way at a campsite.  This year there was  challenging weather -wind, rain and mist which meant there was a higher than usual retiral rate.  This year they had made a great effort to encourage younger runners to enter the event by having cheaper entries for the under 30s.  30 % of teams were first timers and 75 teams had a junior as part of the team.  As the weather was so awful, many teams also took advantage of the new option to change course to a shorter one on the 2nd day.

One Strider ran as part of a pair.  On the Wansfell Route, 93 teams completed the course over the 2 days.  There were 20 who retired or missed controls.  The winning mens pair was Tom Fryers and James Fryers in 6:04:00.  The winning womens team was Hannah Cox and Jessie Glass in 7:24:40.  For full results see SLMM 2023 – 1/2 July 2023 (sportident.co.uk)
