Race Date: Sunday 5th March 2023
Each year several striders and one Totley runner head north to the lakes to run the Haweswater Half Marathon. It’s an extremely well run, cheap half, organised in the back garden of Eden Runners. It is nicely low key starting from Old Bampton memorial hall and heading out over a (quiet) road route alongside Haweswater reservoir before heading back on the same road back to race HQ.
Each person that completes the run gets a cup, a flapjack and a free cup of tea.
The only issue with the run is that it’s around 2.5 hours to travel there. Most years people stay up. Normally Nick Burns and his dad, Syd, extend hospitality to friends for a stay over.
This year Syd and Nick contracted covid so could not attend either for accommodation, marshalling or running
Richard Pegg and Nancy Stuart travelled up anyway. Nancy took Nick’s number which at first looked like a bonus. But some overnight illness made her run a tough effort.
Ian Stinson and Jenny Featherstone also ran making the run the first part of their week in the lakes.
The race was won by Harry Lancaster of Eden Runners in a time of 1hr 11 mins and Jess Young of Swaledale Runners in a time of 1hr 27 mins.
