Race Date: Saturday 1st July 2023

Every month or so I head over the hills back to North West England to racewalk with Lancashire Walking Club. Last Saturday I returned to my home county of Cheshire to race in the countryside near Macclesfield.

Normally for Lancashire races the usual club members turn up with occasional visitors from other parts of the country. Last Saturday we had a visitor from London and also two ladies from Ukraine!

Olena, married to an Englishman and living in Cheshire, had walked with us in the past, although I missed that day. Olena’s parents are now in England, fleeing the fighting in Ukraine. Olena’s mother Tetyana also walked, both had been champion walkers back home in Ukraine.

I finished 2nd/10 in 66.34 but the two Ukrainian ladies were not far behind and they both looked technically very good. I suspect they will be faster than me next time!
