Race Report by Dave Beech
I set another club MV65 record in this race making it a hat-trick of club records to my name since April. I finished in a time 2 hours 47 minutes 55 seconds, (115th out of 182, 1st MV65) some 12 minutes faster than in my best 20 mile race last year and 22 mins faster than my time in the Bingley 20 race two weeks ago.
The course was a flat, out and back route on well surfaced footpaths alongside the River Lune and on the route of the old Lancaster to Morecambe railway line. By the time the race started at 11am the sun was out and it was really warm, not ideal for racing. However, having targeted this race to set a record, I pushed the pace throughout and was on the absolute limit at the end; I was completely shot immediately after the race having given it everything.
I was the sole representative from Striders in the race; most of the competitors sporting the colours of the many running clubs from the North of England including a runner from Totley AC. In a very competitive field nearly 20% of the runners finished in under 2 hours 10 minutes and half the field finished in under 2 hours 40 minutes. Thomas Charles (Chorlton/Trafford AC) won the race in 1:48:48 and Rachel Hodgkinson (Liverpool Harriers) was first female in a time of 2:00:17 (a new course record).
Striders results were as follows:
P | Name | Cat | Cat P | Time |
115 | Dave Beech | MV65 | 1 | 2:47:55 |
Full results can be found on the Run Britain website.
As a post script, Run Britain have my time recorded as a p.b. It might be my p.b. since results have been recorded on Run Britain but it’s certainly not my lifetime p.b as I did close to 2 hours in the East Hull 20 in the pre-internet era!
