Race Report by Robert Cook
Before any recap of the race, a big thank you to Richard Pegg for organising this year’s series for a successful return after a Covid-enforced break. It would have been very easy for this series to have disappeared post-Covid but thanks to Richard’s (and the rest of the volunteer’s) hard work we’ve enjoyed 4 successful races and had a lot of fun testing ourselves over a different distance.
Penistone was the last in the series where the overall prizes would be decided and another good midweek test for everyone racing.
As with the other races in the series, hills were on the menu again! After a fast and frenetic starting loop ‘around the block’ we headed out onto the main course loop and started the gradual, stepped climb that took us all the way to the halfway point. A sharp left turn at the top took us onto a brief section of flat across the top of the course before turning again and charging back down the hill. On reaching the bottom of the hill there was a final nasty little kicker and then it was the final stretch into the football club and over the finish line.
The race was won overall by Kai Sunman of Penistone in 27:22 and first Strider was Seth Kirby in 29:11 and 11th place. Abbie Pearse made it 4 from 4 in the series, winning the women’s race in 31:52. On the night top-3 age-group performances were also achieved by Striders’ Fiona Jeffries and Caroline Greenough (1st and 2nd in the FV50 category) and Jo Gleig (1st in the FV60 category).
In the overall results Striders had several prize winners from the four races.
Abbie Pearse took the overall women’s title and also helped the Striders women’s team take home the team overall with Gillian Allen and Yasmine Chaffer. The Men’s senior team came second to Sheffield RC, and the Men’s veteran team were 3rd with Totley winning the category.
Kathy Liddiard was 2nd overall in the FV35 category, Fiona Jeffries won the FV50 category, Jo Gleig won the FV60 category, Rob Dawson & Al Cook were 2nd and 3rd in the MV50 category, Des Ryan was 3rd in the MV55 category and Kevin Haighton was 3rd in the MV60 category.
Overall this was a really good and enjoyable series, and it was great to see it back after the Covid-enforced break!
