The 2022 Kimberworth Striders 5 Mile Canal Race took place on Sunday 6th November. Entries were up significantly on 2021, with 142 runners taking part, compared to 78 last year.
The Canal Race followed a slightly different route to previous years, taking in two laps of the Blackburn Meadows Nature Reserve. This was particularly exciting for someone who typically only races on roads, and made for an interesting and enjoyable race. It started with one lap of the nature reserve (roughly one mile), which included a very steep but short bank on slippery grass which was a fun addition. Then it was out and back on the paved canal path for approx 3 miles, then another lap of the nature reserve and back up the bank (my sense of humour for which had waned a bit now my legs were tired and not willing to cooperate up the bank the second time round!) and then to the finish. Aside from the bank, the route was pretty much entirely flat and easily runnable in road shoes despite being wet.
Once everyone had finished, it was a short drive to a local pub for a spectacular buffet, drinks and prize giving. For just £5 entry fee, this race offers great value for money, an unusually flat route for Sheffield and a fun day out with the friendly Kimberworth Striders. As second place lady, I also won a bottle of wine to help ease the pain of the race. Just one other strider took part this year – Simon Gleadhall, who did a great job in his first race back from injury in a time of 48:06. Hopefully see some more of you there next year!
The mens race was won by Scott Hinchcliffe of Barnsley Athletic Club in a time of 28:12, whilst the ladies race was won by Che Wigfield-Turner of Hallamshire Harriers, in a time of 32:43.
