Race Date Sunday 15 May 2022
A classic Lake District route (9 miles with 914m of climb, category AM) this is one of the oldest fell races on the calendar having been held since 1966. Starting and finishing at Rydall Hall, Ambleside, competitors are advised that fell racing experience is essential as is the ability to navigate with map and compass for the route is only marked from the start/finish to the Fell Gate whilst GPS navigational devices are banned under FRA rules. Hosts Ambleside AC advise that this is not suitable as a first fell race.
Our own Becky Pease ran finishing as fourth woman after a delay in results led to a brief hope that a podium finish had been achieved. Her Strava blog says much about the race and the perils of camping:
“Fantastic fun. Didn’t get the best night’s sleep the night before, Emily was snoring and I was cold. Psyched that UK came second in Eurovision, but everyone knows Norway should have won it. I love the lakes. Also, there’s a hole in my new sock 🧦 ”
