Race date: 7 June 2022
The route for the Burbage Skyline fell race seems to change every few years. Years ago, the race started with a headlong decent through the boulders to a river crossing. Then it moved to a more sedate start along the path. Then it went from clockwise to anticlockwise. Most of these amendments were to do with protecting ground nesting birds and the latest route tweak was the same. It not only further shortened the race – it’s now down to about 4.5 miles – but introduced a sting in the tail by sending runners hurtling down Carl Wark to finish with the same river crossing that started the race originally.
Despite all the changes, it remains one of the highlights of the local fell race calendar. It was also race number 5 in the 2022 Fell Race Championship. The weather was hot, dry and clear and the midges were out in force at the finish line.
The race was won by Peter Taylor-Bray (Chorlton Runners) in 27:00. First woman was Rachel Thorley (Dark Peak) in 34:13. There were 313 finishers.
