Race date: 28 April 2021
Distance: 8.75km
For many Steel City Striders this was a long awaited return to trail / fell racing. Formally known as Tigers Todger, this race is part of the Totley AC Series. It is the shortest and fastest of the races. It is a mix of road and rocky trail. It’s a pretty simple up and down with no navigation skills required. Starting at the Tigers Rugby club the route takes in a long climb of Limb brook and Lady Cannings, before returning via Houndkirk Moor and Long Line (that dreaded road that no-on speaks fondly of).
Covid forced some adjustments to how the race was run, with waves of 10 setting off at 3 minute intervals. This certainly didn’t take away from the race day feeling though. Socially distanced mingling at the start gave people chance to catch up with friends not seen in 14 months. The sun was shining but there was a biting chill in the air. The close wave starts gave plenty of opportunity for racing out on the course.
There were plenty of smiles and tired looking bodies at the end. Getting back to racing seemed to result in a mix of elation, and tired legs that haven’t been pushed that hard in over a year! Caroline Brock ran a brilliant time to take top spot in the senior womens catagory – well done Caroline!
The rugby club served up drinks and food at the end to add to the atmosphere. Here’s to a good rest of the year racing on the fells.
