Race date: Sunday 1st March 2020
This Running GP event is actually 5 runs in one; marathon, 20 mile, 16 mile, half marathon, 10k and 5k. They all took place last Sunday at the Oulton Park motor racing circuit.
As you might expect, the going was nice smooth tarmac made a lot safer by the total absence of motor vehicles of any sort. Much to the surprise of some contestants, there were hills and a particularly steep banked bit. The weather was great – blue skies and sun – marred only slightly by a howling gale.
I entered the 16 mile run as it fitted in perfectly with the London Marathon training plan that is ruling my life at the moment. The plan’s 16 week duration (and about 500km running commitment) is passing relatively well.
The plan (week 8, Sunday) calls for a 23km run at “easy pace” for me that’s about 7 minutes per km but I was a bit faster than that for various reasons, none of which were particularly creditable. Still, I managed a personal best which was, of course, inevitable as I haven’t run 16 miles (25.75 km) before and probably won’t again!
66 runners ran the 16 miles with Jonathan Girvan of Chester Triathlon Club home first in 01:39:05. Rachel Tomalin (unattached) was first woman home, in 02:05:06.
I think I was the only Strider running but if there were any others (in any event) they will be credited if I get to know about them.
