2020 Kong Mini Mountain Marathon Event 1 Snowdonia Results and Report

Report By: Andy Buck

Race Date: 2nd February 2020

The 2020 Kong Mini Mountain Marathon four-event series began in the Carneddau mountains in Snowdonia.  As with other MMMs, these are “score” events in which the objective is to accumulate as many points as possible within the four hour limit, the points being gained by navigating to control points on the map given to competitors as they start.  And this being Snowdonia, the course included some proper mountains, with two of the controls being on 3000 foot plus summits.  The weather was pretty benign, apart from fierce winds on the highest points and low hanging cloud at about 700m, which made for some navigational challenges.  There were 162 finishers, of which 50 were pairs (so 212 runners altogether).

I came 55th, and 3rd MV60, scoring 360 points in 3:58:03.  I reckon I covered 22km with about 1200m.  The winners were Neil Talbott (Ambleside AC) with 740 points in 3:59:59 (just in time!), and Eleanor Johnstone with 505 points in 4.09.35 (for which she was deducted 15 points from her total of 520).
