Race Date: Saturday 14th October 2017
Is there a better way to spend your birthday than running a 50 mile ultra? No, I didn’t think so either so that is exactly what I did. 183 other people seemed to agree with me anyway.
After a 4.30am wake up call, we drove over to Wath for a 7am start. Just over 10 hours later, I stumbled across the finish line to a Striders funnel manned by Simon Bayliss who had very kindly waited two hours for me to finish so he could cheer me across the line and wish me happy birthday. Cheers, Simon, that was a really kind thing to do, and yes folks, Simon finished in just over 8 hours. Phenomenal performance.
In the scheme of things, the course is not the most inspiring – some nice parts but a lot of ploughed fields. I think I’m spoilt by the Sheffield Way. However, it cost £15, the pit stops were well stocked with good food and everyone was really friendly. Pleased I’ve done it but probably wouldn’t rush back. Would be good to get a Striders team organised for the relay however.
The race was won by Ken Sutor of Cheshire Hash House Harriers in 7.01.13. The first woman home was Ellie Woodhead of Kimberworth Striders in 9.18.38
