The multi-sport discipline of triathlon, made famous in the UK by Leeds-based Olympians the Brownlees, now has it’s very own bi-annual event in Holmfirth – this one aptly named Last of the Summer Tri.
The sprint triathlon starts at the Holmfirth Pool and Fitness Centre, with a pool swim of 400 m (20 lengths), followed by a bike ride of 24 km which encompasses an 8 km loop, taking in Holmfirth, New Mill and through to Brockholes. With two short, steep inclines, this leads to a fast, ‘easy’ bike sections with lots of long downhills. Finally, the 5.7km run takes a similar route down to New Mill then back towards Thongsbridge before returning once again to the starting point for a sprint finish.
Three Striders made the journey to Last of the Summer Wine territory and all performed well in all three disciplines. Richard Pegg will be back next year to reclaim the top Striders spot after not getting the memo that transition should be speedy, and instead stopping for a hair comb and round of scrabble instead of rushing from swim to bike.
