Race Date: Saturday 25th June 2017
The Lairig Ghru is the best known mountain-pass in Scotland. It climbs to an altitude of 2733 feet, crossing through the central Cairngorms from Braemar in Deeside to Aviemore in Speyside, and is described as one of the wildest areas in the country. The walk is described as a true classic, the fell race, well that just looks brutal.
Run over 43km between the police stations of Braemar and Aviemore, the Lairig Ghru is a category C Long Hill Race, organised by Deeside Runners. The 2017 staging of the race saw a record 219 competitors make their way through the wilderness. First over the line in Aviemore was Murray Strain of Hunters Bog Trotters in a time of 2:58:10, and first lady home was Joanna Zakrzewski of Dumfries Running Club in a time of 3:53:27. Amongst the numbers setting out from Braemar Nick was Strider Stephen Hargreaves, who finished in an impressive time of 4:11:13. Well done Stephen!

I’ve scoured the internet and can’t find any photos from this year’s running of this race, which is a pity as no doubt the backdrop to the race must be truely astounding. If Stephen has any snaps from the day then we’d be happy to add one to this post!
