Race Date: 30th May
This fell race is always on the Tuesday evening after the second bank holiday in May. An out and back from the Hallamshire Cricket Club to the church gate at Stannington, so the course runs steeply down, steeply up, steeply down, steeply up with no flat whatsoever (800m of climb in total in its 3.25 miles). It is only open to members of South Yorkshire running clubs, and this year our club fielded more entrants than any other club with one in three runners being a strider! The Chase uses a handicap system; tortoises off first, whippets last, with the aim to all finish together. There is a huge amount of heritage relating to the event with records going back to 1862.
There was a proper downpour as people gathered for the race which ensured that Den Bank was good and slippy. Thankfully the rain eased off mostly for the actual race.
Barbara Haigh (VF70) of Penistone RC was first home with a handicap time of 38:41 (actual time 37:01). First man home was Stuart Maycock (VM45) of Hallamshire in a handicap time of 39:26 (actual time 25:06).
Fastest actual time was recorded by Nathan Lawson of Hallam University who covered the course in 22:30. Fastest lady was Ellie Crownshaw of Hallamshire in 29:10.
