Ahhh, Madrid in the Springtime. It’s a popular tourist destination as the weather begins to warm; some people take in the incredible sights that the Spanish capital has to offer, some visit the footballing mecca that is the Estadio de Santiago Bernabeu, whilst others visit with the sole intention of pounding the wide boulevards in search of running glory. Never one for half measures, Richard Pegg set out to assemble a crack Striders unit that could achieve all three in a weekend.
The EDP Rock ‘n’ Roll Madrid marathon is now in it’s 40th year, expanding from a small event in 1978 to a multi-distance festival of running it is today, attracting elites and club runners alike from around the globe. This year the marathon race was won by Ethiopian Dida Bonsa in a time of 02:10:16 and the half marathon by Joseph Kiptum of Kenya in a time of 01:01:44. First ladies over the line were Elizabeth Rumokol (Kenya) in 02:33:55 and Tejitu Daba (Ethiopia) in 01:11:29 for the marathon and half marathon respectively.
Six Striders took to the streets of the Spanish capital in search of glory. Jill Davies, Laura Fletcher, Nancy Stuart, Nicole Nield and Graham Nield opted for the fast and furious half marathon whilst Richard Pegg decided to take on the full distance. All performed incredibly and did the club proud. Well done!
