Race Date: Saturday 26th March 2016
Report by David Whittaker.
Over 12,000 runners (and 2 Striders) descended on the Welsh capital to join some of the world’s best runners competing in the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships. There was huge hype around Mo Farah who was competing against the current world half marathon champion Geoffrey Kamworor who he beat to World 10k gold in Beijing in 2015.
The skies were blue and the weather was balmy…the day before! And then Storm Katie popped by for a visit on race day! Anyone who watched the live BBC coverage will particularly recall the heavy downpour and blustery conditions from around 50 minutes into the race.
Whilst the elites were almost done and dusted, (Kamworor coming out on top to win in a speedy 59:10 with Mo finishing 3rd in 59:59 – the winning lady was Peres Jechirchir of Kenya in 1:07:31) the rest of us had to push on in “testing conditions”.
In better conditions, this is a flat and fast course with huge PB potential and excellent support throughout.
Despite the weather, the 2 Striders present put in 2 solid performances – David running and Steve “jogging” around.

Mr Helmore raring to go…
Geoffrey Kamworor flying off the front of the field, despite tripping at the start and at one point (close to the start) being about 200th…
David grinning through the pain…
