Brief race report by Nicole Brown
I had a fabulous day yesterday doing the Goathland Hardmoors trail marathon. I’m not going to attempt a full race report – I just really want to say thank you to the Monday night SLIMs group.
I started running 4 years ago because I wanted to run ultras. (Don’t ask. Bizarre midlife crisis. Can think of no other reason.) Since then I’ve done 10 ultras, very slowly. It’s been about the endurance. About completing & not competing.
But I’ll be honest – it’s hard looking at races and thinking – ‘Will I make the cut-offs?’
Since doing the Hardmoors 60 in September I’ve trained really hard to up my average pace. I was hoping to do the race yesterday (29miles, 4300ft ascent) between 8h15 and 8h45 – cut off being 9h. I did it in 7:34:56 – nearly 2 minutes per mile faster than I expected.
A key run in my weekly training has been Monday night with the SLIMs, often led by Kev. It’s been great step up for me. It has helped me to attack *inclines* & to up my pace considerably.
So thank you SLIMs. I’m hugely encouraged!
Well done Nicole, a great result. Altogether there were 95 finishers, with a number of others caught by the sweep! The race was won by Daniel Jones in 3.55.12. The first woman was Katie Kaars Sijpesteijn in 4.10.49.
