An Introduction to fell running session has been arranged which is open to all club members free of charge.
If you’re unfamiliar with fell running, firstly, please read this excellent Fell Introduction document by Andy Buck.
We are trying to give people enough confidence to try fell running and to get as many new fell runners as possible to do the Tigers Todger fell race on the evening of Wednesday 6th May. Its been chosen as the target race as its one of the easiest fell races on the calendar and a great starting point.
You don’t need any previous fell running experience or any fancy kit to come along to the introductory session, as long as you can manage around 6 miles you will be able to take part. This will be a good opportunity to try out fell running without the pressure of a race and is perfect preparation for the Tigers Todger.
The only required kit for the introductory sessions is a waterproof jacket (a normal cagoule is fine if you don’t have a running jacket) and bring the shoes with the biggest tread you have.
The session will take place on Saturday 18th April at 2pm.
There will be an Initial briefing at the Tigers’ hospitality unit covering:
- Equipment (advice on what shoes, clothing etc to use)
- Running techniques (advice on how to tackle uphill and downhill running over varying terrain)
- Navigation (the basics of navigating out in the hills)
- Nutrition (what to eat and drink on the run)
- Beginner friendly races
This will be followed by a guided run with experienced fell runners from the club including Helen Calder, Jeni Pitkin and Andy Buck. There will also be support from Don Longley from Totley AC who is very knowledgeable about the routes in the surrounding area.
There will also be a question and answer session following the run and opportunities to ask questions out on the run itself.
Places on the session are limited, please confirm your attendance by emailing Nancy Stuart through the contact form on the website, but note there will be a cut-off point.
Note: The session is free for Striders to attend.
The bar at Sheffield Tigers will be open following the run and we are welcome to go into the clubhouse for hot and cold drinks, food is also available to purchase.
Location: Sheffield Tigers RUFC, Dore Moor, Hathersage Road, S17 3AB
Note: Muddy shoes and wet and muddy clothing will not be allowed within the venue. Please bring spare clothing and footwear in case you get muddy. Changing facilities are available.
